The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Heroes (Complete Idiot's Guide)
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Distribution (June, 1999)
Authors: Jay Stevenson and Matthew Budman
Average review score:

Intriguing view of American history via its heroes.
We were particularly excited about the Sports and Music selections. The choices were piquant and perceptive. The descriptions of the selections were particularly fascinating in their unique view of herodom in this age of popular consumer driven society. I would strongly recommend this book and its off-beat view of our world of American history to a generation unused to reading about our heros and role models from a realistic, while yet Zen, perspective. Kudos to the authors and particularly the fine editing staff!!!

The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Signet Classic (November, 1996)
Authors: Edgar Allan Poe and Jay Parini
Average review score:

Grief be upon those who do not buy this book.
From the sorrowful and melancholic lines of "Ulalume" to the exclamatory rhymes of "The Bells," this thin volume has it all. (Well, not exactly all, for this book does not have some of the lesser known poems of Poe such as "To Isadore," "A Paean," and "An Enigma" - but it is nonetheless a great book to have.)

For big Poe fans, especially, this is true. There are so many anthologies which carry about two or three of his poems, but it is not easy to find one that is solely dedicated to his complete poetry. Usually, it is his short stories that attract publishers' attention.

Since Poe's poetry is so beautifully-written and delightful to recite, it's good to have a book on which you could look at whenever you forget a Poe poem, or simply want to read or reread one.

Edgar Allan Poe never left behind as big a bulk of literature as Charles Dickens or Henry James. In fact, compared to many other classic writers, he didn't leave much behind. So, indeed, what little he left can all be contained in within a section of a bookshelf. So why not own his work?

Poe was an excellent literary thinker, whose imagination will never be rivaled. And to those who enjoy good poetry, this book must be in within your bookshelves.

Concise Norton Recorded Anthology of Western Music: Short Recordings
Published in Audio CD by W.W. Norton & Company (March, 1996)
Authors: Claude Palisca and Donald Jay Grout
Average review score:

A Great Music History Reference
This collection is a great tool for anyone involved in music history. It contains music from the best composers of every major era of music, from Ancient Greece to Twentieth Century. True, the selections are shorter and fewer than in the other two Norton Anthology volumes, but this collection contains the best of each of those. The Concise Norton Recorded Anthology is definately the one to chose if you only want four comprehensive CD's instead of twelve.

Since this collection contains such a variety of music, there is a song for whatever you are in the mood for: sad, happy, thought-provoking, you name it. Whether you are studying or teaching music, or just want one collection with a wide variety of music, the Concise Norton Recorded Anthology of Western Music is a great choice.

Condor Canyon
Published in Audio Cassette by Buttonwillow Books (August, 1996)
Author: Larry Jay Martin
Average review score:

Another exciting Clint Ryan saga
In this book of the ongoing saga of ex-sailor turned California rancher, Martin once again wows us with his well researched novel. He skillfully uses real old time California incidences and weaves them into his exciting and fast-paced novels. Clint Ryan is drawn into a kidnapping of one of the patriarchs of an old-time California family. Relucantent to get involved, Clint Ryan is drawn into the crime by the lovely twin granddaughters of the old Don, and once there, he doesn't quit until justice is served, and evil is vnaquished. A surprise ending and grim proof that even good suffers when it is forced to fight against bad make this book one of LJ Martin's very best.

Contemporary Astronomy
Published in Paperback by Saunders College Publishing (June, 1985)
Author: Jay M. Pasachoff
Average review score:

One of the Very Best Astronomy Texts
Even though the 1989 edition is a little out of date, this text is still one of the best (if not the best) astronomy texts of its kind. It is not only very easy to read, it is exciting too. The text treats the theory of light basically but very thoroughly. The author presents the relativistic aspects of light as it bears on astronomy in a clear and understandable manner. Pasachoff deals with stellar nuclear fusion and stellar evolution with unparalled clarity. He has an "illuminating" chapter on black holes. The text is somewhat lacking on cosmology, but, perhaps, that is best because of the many recent advances in that area. The last half of the book treats the solar system very adequately. The book is complemented with many helpful tables and figures. I would recommend Pasachoff's text for any serious reader who wants a first exposure to astronomy or who wants a thorough refresher on this wonderful subject. If you are thinking of waiting for the next edition, don't; get this edition and enjoy it now and by the time the next edition comes out you will have already gone a long way to mastering this subject.
